Abstract:Van Lake Basin is formed the eastern part of the Eastern Anatolia Compressional Tectonic Block.Within this area, the largest closed basin with an area of approximately 15.496 km2 forms the Van Lake basin.Van Lake Basin is a highly tectonically active basin. The geodynamic evolution of the basin is controlled by many active faults. The Van Fault Zone is one of the active faults in the eastern part of the Van Lake Basin. This fault zone has once again demonstrated its activity in the Holocene period with the earthquake that took place in 2011. In this study, it is aimed to classify the Pliocene-Quaternary tectonic development of Van Fault Zone and Yeniköşk Fault, kinematic analysis and temporal / spatial classification of faulting data in sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the basin. For this purpose, fieldwork and fault kinematic analyzes have been carried out.Eight different locations were determined as a result of the field studies on these faults. In order to reveal the Pliocene-Quaternary tectonic development of the region, kinematic data were obtained from 36 different fault planes.According to this, the compression direction in the Pliocene period is N40W whereas the extentional is in the N50E direction. At the same time, Van Lake suggests that the Pliocene tectonic regime of the east is a dextral strike-slip fault with normal component. When it comes to the Pleistocene era, it is seen that the direction of compression that dominates the region is NNW-SSE.However, it is seen that the reversed-direction strike-slip tectonic regime, which is replaced by the dominant tectonic regime in the region, appears to be effective.
