Abstract:Erciş (Van), located on the northern part of the Lake Van basin, has a critical place from the construction and development aspects. This region has active earthquake risk. There were high magnitude (7.3 and 7.1) earthquakes occurred in 1976 and 2011 in Erciş. The earthquake happened on 23rd October, 2011 (Mw=7.1) caused severe damage in the villages located on the northern part of Van and Erciş. Erciş, which is the largest district of Van, is under the influence of the Çaldıran fault, Erciş-Kocapınar fault and Van fault. Erciş settlement area is located on quaternary aged lake and river sediments consisted of permeable units having near surface underground water level. The settlement area of Erciş has liquefaction risk because of the soil conditions as well as regional tectonics and seismicity. For this purpose, determination of liquefaction potential was carried out by 165 geotechnics drilling data and 21 seismic refraction and surface wave measurement in this study. Liquefaction analyses were carried out using SPT test results and shear wave velocity values gathered from seismic refraction and surface wave measurement tests. This study revealed that the liquefaction risk is significant as getting closer to Lake Van and at the places having near surface underground water level. The analytic approaches (LPI and LSI) and shear wave velocity are used for liquefaction analysis and various liquefaction potential maps are prepared for Erciş. All of maps were carried out in GIS environment. As a result, the proposed final liquefaction potential map should be considered by policy makers during urban planning projects in Erciş.
