Abstract:

The Urartian Kingdom, which came to the fore as an important power of the Near East in the 9th-7th centuries BC, existed in a mountainous and rugged region centered on Van (Tuspa). The rich mineral deposits in this region have contributed greatly to the development of Urartian art (Belli, 2004: 39). The Urartians made their add-on works using different materials. It is seen in the list of works in which the city of Muşaşir (Ardini), where bronze was used a lot, especially in the Urartians, was plundered (Loon, 1966: 85). Looking at this list, it can be said that the works made of bronze metal have a very important place in Urartian art. The Urartians knew how to use other metals besides Bronze very well. Especially with the development of mining activities, the production of aesthetic works of art with very different techniques has begun. Although not much has been uncovered so far, the artifacts found in the excavations made in the Urartian settlements and in different ways show the magnificence of the Urartian art. It is seen that the add-ons of works, which date back to very old times and appear with different styles in the art of many civilizations, are used lovingly in the Urartians. It has been suggested that these artifact attachments, which are known to be produced from different metals, generally function as decorative ornaments on objects such as cauldrons, candlesticks, ceramics, thrones and shields in Urartian art. In this thesis, a small number of Urartian period artifacts scattered around the world and similar finds in the Van Museum inventory, which came to the Van Museum from excavations and from different ways, will be discussed.
