Abstract:

Storing hydrogen in chemical compounds, also referred to as chemical hydrogen storage, is one of the most effective ways to store hydrogen efficiently and release it when desired. Among the chemical hydrogen storage materials investigated so far, the most promising boron-nitrogen compound for portable systems is ammonia-borane. Although there are multiple methods to controllably release hydrogen stored in ammonia-borane, solvolysis in protic solvents (such as water and methanol) is the most suitable technique when considering portable systems. When a suitable catalyst is designed, hydrolysis or methanolysis of ammonia-borane results in the release of 3 moles of hydrogen gas per mole of ammonia-borane at room temperature. Methanolysis of ammonia-borane has some advantages compared to hydrolysis, such as (i) the high solubility of ammonia-borane in methanol, (ii) the production of high purity hydrogen without ammonia contamination, and (iii) the methanolysis of ammonia-borane can also occur at temperatures below 273 K. These advantages are extremely important for the practical applications of hydrogen storage technology for various applications. In this thesis study, hybrid composite solid-supported magnetic Rh (0) nanoparticles were easily prepared by impregnation/reduction steps and then their structural/morphological characterizations were carried out. The prepared catalyst was tested in the ammonia-borane methanolysis reaction and its hydrogen production performance was investigated. Finally, detailed kinetic studies were carried out for each variable parameter in the catalytic reaction, the reaction rate equation was determined and activation parameters were calculated.
