Abstract:

Establishing a great kingdom in Eastern Anatolia in the 1st thousand BC, the Urartians used the metal very well and brought many works in various fields to the present day. Using gold, silver, copper and bronze, they are highly developed in the mining field. Since they are more durable and easier to process bronze, they mostly preferred bronze as a raw material. They produced many works including bronze sculptures, horse harnesses, helmets, bracelets, shields, quiver, arrowheads, pins, belts and metal plates. sheet metal forming an important group of Urartu art, they dispersed to various museums in Turkey and the world. The plates attract attention with the variety and number of decorations embroidered on them. Studies on bronze plates of dressed origin give information especially about the religion of Urartu, religious ceremonies, and attire. Different figures were worked on the plates, which were examined in ten groups by considering their stylistic features, by using different techniques. On these plates, it is possible to see the artistic characteristics of Urartu contemporary and societies that lived before Urartu. Although various ideas have been put forward about their intended use, the abundance of religious scenes indicates that these plates are mostly used as objects in a protective sense. With this study, the artifacts in the Van Museum have been evaluated in terms of iconography. The fact that religious figures were engraved on the works, whose drawings and analyzes were made in detail, did not go unnoticed. The artistic and historical development of the plates, as well as their interaction with contemporary cultures are discussed. Key words: İconography, Metal Art, Metal Pates, Urartians.
