Abstract:

Energy security has a vital importance for both producers and consumers, as well as for states on the transit routes of energy resources. In the 21st century, in a process of deepening political and economic dependence between states, energy security has become a very important concept. After the modernization of consumer societies in the world, energy has become an indispensable element for increasingly prominent economic systems. The main reason why energy is a very significant factor is the connection established between the concept of energy and security. This study aims to analyze the possibility of increasing competition in the field of energy among states and other international actors to create an international security problem in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean. In the thesis, firstly, the change and transformation processes of the concept of security within the framework of Security Studies and International Relations discipline are revealed and the main international security problems are discussed. Secondly, the concept of energy security has been defined through its different dimensions. Thirdly, the potential of competition in the energy field, which is the focus of the thesis, to create an international security problem among states today, has been examined through the example of hydrocarbon resources discovered in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Eastern Mediterranean.
