Abstract:

The economic reforms and open-door policy initiated by Deng Xiaoping in 1978 started a new era for China. The fast-growing Chinese economy as a result of economic reforms has greatly increased the country's energy needs and and as a result of increasing energy demand, China has become the world's largest energy consumer. Energy security has become one of the main priorities of China, with the country becoming a net oil importer in 1993 and the huge increase in oil imports in the early 2000s. Due to the dependence on imported oil and the supply of imported oil from distant and unstable regions such as the Middle East and Africa, oil supply security has constituted the most fundamental component of China's energy security strategy. China's dependence on imported oil has increased the importance of reliable oil suppliers. In order to ensure oil supply security, China has started to develop its economic, political and cultural relations with oil-rich countries. In this context, Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, has emerged as an important energy partner for China. This study aims to analyze Saudi Arabia's position in China's energy security strategy.
