Abstract:

Boron-nitrogen-hydrogen (B-N-H) compounds are of great interest in the solid state storage of hydrogen due to their high hydrogen capacities. As a B-N-H derivative, guanidine borohydride ([C(NH2)3]+[BH4]-, GBH) is a potential chemical hydrogen storage material with a hydrogen content of 13.1 wt%. It was first synthesized by Schechter in 1954. In the following years, GBH was synthesized purely by Groshens and Rieger and proposed as a hydrogen storage material by investigating its thermal decomposition properties. Since the ammonia released during hydrogen production from GBH through thermal decomposition has a toxic effect especially for fuel cells, different alternatives have been used in hydrogen production. For this purpose, the focus is on hydrogen production studies from GBH by hydrolysis. GBH is resistant to self hydrolysis and it has been reported that 4 moles of H2 per GBH can be obtained by hydrolysis reaction in the presence of a suitable catalyst. In this master thesis, Ru (0) or Rh (0) nanoclusters (Ru/TiO2; Ru/ZrO2; Ru/CeO2; Rh/TiO2; Rh/ZrO2; Rh/CeO2) supported by different metal oxides (TiO2; ZrO2 and CeO2) prepared as ex-situ by using the classical method for the first time as a heterogeneous catalyst in the hydrogen production from the hydrolysis of GBH and the most effective metal-support couple was determined. After the most effective catalytic material was characterized by advanced analytical and spectroscopic methods, catalytic reactions were carried out at different temperatures with different catalyst and substrate concentrations, and activation parameters (Ea: Activation Energy; ΔH*: Enthalpy of Activation; ΔS*: Entropy of Activation) were calculated and the reaction kinetics has been revealed.
