Abstract:Since biological processes are not sufficient in the treatment of leachate, it has become important to carry out appropriate methods together and advanced oxidation processes have been used. In this study, the characterization of the leachate formed in the Van Province Landfill was made, and its treatability was investigated by applying classical fenton and heterogeneous fenton processes. In the classical Fenton process; optimum values of reaction time, pH, Fe+2 and H2O2 dosages were determined; Average 72% COD and 63% TOC removal efficiencies were obtained at pH 3, 800 mg/L Fe+2 dosage, 1000 mg/L H2O2 dosage and 60 min reaction time. In the heterogeneous fentone process, using a two-level factorial design combined with the response surface methodology, the operating parameters in the heterogeneous fenton process have been optimized for the treatment of landfill leachate. The optimum dosage of [H2O2] and [Fe3O4], shaking ratio and initial pH parameters were determined as 800 mg/L, 334.54 mg/L, 255 rpm and 3.34, respectively, in order to achieve maximum 75% COD removal in the treatment of leachate with heterogeneous fentone process. The results obtained confirmed that the quadratic model is suitable for heterogeneous fenton (R2=0.9896) and that the variables mentioned above significantly affect the COD removal efficiency. As a result of experimental studies, the applicability of advanced oxidation methods has been proven for the treatment of leachate that pose a serious environmental problem.
