Abstract:

Başkale Fay Zone (BFZ) is an active tectonic structure formed to the south of Eastern Anatolian Contractional Tectonic Block (DAST) which is a part of East Anatolian-Iran Plateau. Başkale Basin, extends roughly N30°E for some 30 km from Yavuzlar town in the north east and continues to the Işıklar village to the southwest is formed during the Quaternary under control of the BFZ. The fault zone strikes N10°E to N40°E and formed of Işıklı, Ziraniş and Çamlık fault segments. The morphological signature of these faults is represented by fault-controlled drainage systems (such as the Çığılsuyu River), offset stream channels, alluvial fan formation and ridge-type travertines accompanied with recent volcanic structures. In this study, we aimed to investigate the tectonic geomorphology of BFZ by conducting morphometric analyzes which are frequently used in active tectonic research. For this purpose, morphometric indices such as hypsometric integral, drainage basin asymmetry, ratio of valley floor width to valley height and mountain top crest are calculated using high resolution digital elevation models. The result of the morphometric analysis reveals that the area has a very young topography and is actively uplifting at a rate of ~0.5 mm per year in the west decreasing eastward.
