Özet

Enzyme inhibition and free radical scavenging activities of wild collected Thymbra sintenisii Bornm. et Aznav. subsp. sintenisii Bornm. et Aznav. from Turkey Özek, T.1,2, Yur, S.2 , Yıldız, G.1 , Tekin, F.3 , Göger F.1,2, Özek, G.1 1 Anadolu University, Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacognosy, 26470-Eskişehir, Turkey 2 Anadolu University, Medicinal Plant, Drug and Scientific Research Center (AUBIBAM), 26470-Eskişehir, Turkey 3 GAP International Agricultural research and Training Center (GAPUTAEM), 21280-Sur, Diyarbakır, Turkey tozek@anadolu.edu.tr Thymbra sintenisii Bornm. et Aznav. subsp. sintenisii Bornm. et Aznav. (TSS) (Lamiaceae) has an important commercial value as both herb and oil source in Turkey. In the current study, essential oil and methanol extract of TSS were analyzed for their activity towards lipoxygenase (LOX), linked to inflammatory disease, and xanthine oxidase (XO), related to gout, hepatitis and tumors, inhibitory activities and antioxidant activity, concerned with the use of natural food as alternative preservatives instead of synthetics. The oil was analyzed by GC-FID and GC/MS and the extract was analyzed by LC/ MS. Phenolic compounds were found in the extract and thymol, carvacrol, p-cymene and b-caryophyllene were found to be the main compounds in the oil. TSS extract inhibited LOX (43.8 %) and XO (60.1 %), while the oil had a low LOX inhibition (10.7 %) and had no effect on XO. Antioxidant activities of the extract and essential oil were determined by using HP-TLC technique and microtiter plate assay based on decolorization of free radical DPPH• . The free radical scavenging activity of the extract and the oil were found as IC50 1.01±0.08 mg/mL and IC50 0.08±0.01 mg/mL, respectively. The present work results demonstrated that T. sintenisii subsp. sintenisii is a potential source of active natural products.
