Modern ulus devletlerde kimlik inşa politikaları, bu devletlerin yapısı içerisinde son derece önemli bir yere sahiptir. Türkiye’de, cumhuriyetin kuruluşundan günümüze kadar uzanan siyasi ve toplumsal tartışmaların büyük bir kısmının kökeninde ulusdevlet kavramı çerçevesinde bir ulus anlayışının inşası yatmaktadır. Bu anlayış, Türk etnik kimliğinin her düzeyde egemenliğini üst düzeyde kabul eder. Türkçülüğü esas alan bu ulus inşası, Türkleştirme politikaları üzerinden toplumsal alandan iktisadi hayata, eğitimden kültürel yapıya kadar geniş bir yelpazede kendini hissettirmiştir. Kültürel manada heterojen bir toplumsal yapıya sahip olan imparatorluk mirasından bir milliyete dayalı ulus-devlet sürecine geçiş, günümüze kadar süregelen tartışmaları da beraberinde getirmiştir. Ulus devlet olarak tarih sahnesine çıkan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin ulus inşa politikalarını toplumun geneline yaygınlaştırmak amacıyla kullandığı en önemli argümanlardan biri de yerel gazetelerdir. Van Gazetesi de bu anlamdan erken cumhuriyet döneminde kurulmuş gazetelerden biridir. Bu çalışmada, Van şehrinde 1939 yılında yayın hayatına başlayan Van Gazetesi’nin 1939 ila 1943 yılları arasındaki 162 sayısı, ‘Yerel gazeteler yoluyla Türklük, Türk ulusçuluğunun kimlik inşası’ çerçevesinde incelenmiştir. In modern nation-states, the identity-building policies have a highly important place in the structure of these nations. . In Turkey, building a mentality of nation on the basis of nation-state concept lies at the root of greater part of political and public debates ranging from the foundation of the republic to present. This mentality accepts every level of sovereignty of Turkish ethnic identity on high level. This nation-building mentality that bases on Turkism have made itself apparent on wide range from social sphere to economic life, education to cultural structure through the Turkification policies. Changeover from a culturally heterogeneous-structured imperial heritage to a course of nation-state based upon one nationality have brought ongoing debates until today with it. Local newspapers are one of the most important arguments that the Republic of Turkey, appeared on the stage of history as a nation-state, uses on the purpose of spreading the nation-building policies through community-wide. In this sense, the Van Newspaper is one of these newspapers founded in the early republican period. Of Van Newspaper which has begun its broadcasting life in 1939, a number of 162 issues published between 1939 and 1943 were researched in this study within the scope of ‘The Turkishness and identity-building of Turkish nationalism via local newspapers’.
