Özet

This study aims to model the settlement suitability of Özalp (Van) District, characterized by a harsh continental climate and rugged topography, using geospatial parameters (geology, slope, elevation, etc.) through a GIS-based Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. In the research, where 10 different parameters were subjected to Weighted Overlay analysis, it was determined that while 0.67% of the area was found to be 'Unsuitable' and 65.76% 'Marginally suitable', a portion of 33.57% was identified as favorable (Suitable-Highly suitable) for settlement. High slopes, fertile agricultural lands, and alluvial valley floors emerge as the primary constraints. The findings emphasize that urban growth should be directed toward geologically stable slopes while preserving agricultural ecosystems and hydro-ecological sensitivities. The resulting suitability model provides a scientific decision-support framework for local governments in sustainable spatial planning processes.
