Özet
Water transmission channels are one of the art structures in irrigation networks. These
channels that projected for the purpose of agricultural irrigation are built with concrete
coated usually in rectangular and trapezoidal sections. One of the most important problems
of these channels built in our country is the water losses due to leak, and the other is the
deformations that occur as a result of the collapse in the slopes of the trapezoidal channels.
For this reason, the water level is lost and the flow rates decrease until it reaches the land.
Leakage losses reduce irrigation efficiency and damage the lands around the canal. The
collapse and deformations on the slopes reduce the irrigation efficiency and create serious
economic problems for maintenance and repair. Polystyrene is thermoplastic a building
material that its containing 98% air with closed-pores, very light, very cheap and
indefinitely lasting. Since the styrene that makes up polystyrene is not melt and insoluble
in water, the walls of its closed pores are waterproof. Besides when used as a filling
material on soft soils, it can reduce the lateral and vertical effects and prevent collapse
problems on slopes with erosion and slip/landslide potential. In this study; Suggestions
have been presented to reduce maintenance and repair expenses and water losses that
occurred due to leakage and collapse by the use of polystyrene in water transmission
channels for agricultural irrigation.
