The direction of the relationship between financial development and income inequality remains a contested issue in the development economics literature. This study tests the direction of causality for Türkiye over the period 1990–2023 using the Toda-Yamamoto approach, employing series compiled from the World Bank Development Indicators (WDI) database: the Gini coefficient (SI.POV.GINI), domestic credit to the private sector as a share of GDP (FS.AST.PRVT.GD.ZS), and stock market turnover ratio (CM.MKT.TRNR). ADF unit root tests indicate that the Gini coefficient and stock market turnover are not stationary at levels (I(1)); a VAR(4) model is estimated with dmax = 1 based on a VAR(3) model, and causality directions are tested via Wald tests. Contrary to expectations, the findings reveal a statistically significant causality running not from financial development to income inequality, but from income inequality to credit expansion (Wald = 17.54; p = 0.002); no significant causality is found from credit volume to Gini, from stock market turnover to Gini, or from Gini to stock market turnover. This finding suggests that, in the Turkish sample, changes in income distribution predict banking sector credit supply, while the reverse does not hold; this calls into question, at least in the Turkish context, the common assumption that financial inclusion will reduce inequality. Due to the small sample size (N = 34) and the fact that part of the credit series was completed via linear interpolation, the findings should be regarded as exploratory rather than definitive and should be validated with alternative methods such as the ARDL bounds test.
