Özet

Adequate and balanced nutrition has been an important problem throughout human history. As part of agriculture, with the domestication of animals for food production, the interaction between human beings and animals has led to changes in all branches of animal husbandry. Animal health, which is the main factor in obtaining sufficient, high quality and sustainable products, dates back to old times as much as the interaction between human and animal and the fact that good products will be obtained from a healthy animal is well known by mankind. Poultry meat is one of the most preferred consumer preferences due to its lower cost of sale and nutritious properties compared to red meat. Genetic selection programs implemented in the last 60 years in broiler production caused rapid growth rate, an increase in slaughter weight and especially important carcass part weights, while significantly decreasing slaughter age and feed consumption. This rapid development induces some metabolic defects, which are among the leading welfare problems in broilers. The high need for animal protein sources has changed the production method of animal husbandry and, as is seen in almost all production branches today, it has taken the form of continuing production in the shortest time, at least feed and in very small areas. However, these production systems, which put pressure on animals, have become questioned by consumers especially in recent years. Animal welfare is the health and well-being of animals, and it is characterized in that the way humans raise animals can cause physical and mental suffering in animals. The search for better welfare conditions in animal production is seen as a global trend. Rapid growth rate and growth-promoting feeding procedures cause a wide range of welfare problems in modern broiler flocks. Among these problems; sudden death syndrome and ascites syndrome due to cardiovascular diseases; foot-leg deformations, lameness, inactivity and skin lesions in areas that contact poor quality litter material. The welfare problem is a very important issue for the sustainability of the broiler industry. The modern broiler industry must focus on a production process that not only focuses on performance enhancement but also takes into account the effects of an increase in productivity on the well-being of the broiler.
