This study proposes a novel double negative (DNG) metamaterial superstate to improve the
directivity of the microstrip patch antenna (MPA) in Ku Band (12 GHz). For this enhancement, initially a
microstrip patch antenna operating at 12 GHz is designed and simulated by CST MWS program. Then a
new DNG metamaterial unit cell is designed. In order to increase the total capacitive and inductive effects
in this structure and to tune the structure as DNG at the desired frequency band a few experiments are carried
out. Then this unit cell is converted into a 2x2 periodic planar structure and placed in front of the reference
MPA as a lens. It is observed that the directivity of MPA increased 2.46 dB by utilizing this DNG
superstrate.
