Aim: Recently, it has been emphasized that the full moon phase of the moon has an effect on suicide attempts. The purpose of this article, the
September data of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) were examined. The relationship between physician suicid events and the full moon
was discussed.
Material method: The purpose of this article, the relationship between suicide attempts among physicians and full moon in September 2023
was examined from the data of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB).
Results: In the September 2023 data of the TTB, 3 physicians (2 females and 1 male) had a suicide attempt. The first case involved a 36-year-old
woman and an emergency specialist, 2nd case wad 29-year-old female and anaesthetic assistant, while 3rd case was GP at 33. All 3 suicide
attempts occurred on the first day of the full moon (Hijri:13 Rebiulewwal 1445) and all of them resulted in death.
Discussion: Niculescu et al. examined medical association data in Indiana regarding suicides. They recommend that people at high risk for
suicide, such as those with anxiety, depression should be monitored more closely during the full moon, in the afternoons, and especially in
September. Similar to literature, in our study suicide attempts occurred during full moon. Female physicians attempting suicides is higher,
similar to the literature. For Suicide, the risk group is physicians over the age of 55 in literature, while the average age of physicians in this study
is that of younger physicians. Full moon days are also notable in different cultures. These days, fasting is recommended in Islamic civilization, but
there are not enough studies on its effect on suicide.
Conclusion: Suicide attempts among physicians in September 2023 in Türkiye occurred during the full moon.
