Özet

Due to its nature, agricultural production is subject to significant risks and uncertainties. The sustainability of agricultural enterprises relies on their capacity to manage these challenges efficiently. Agricultural insurance serves as an effective mechanism to mitigate potential losses, thereby supporting both the continuity of enterprises and sustainable agricultural production. The study examines the effects of socio-economic and farm-level characteristics on peanut farmers’ agricultural insurance decisions, based on face-to-face survey data collected from 64 producers in Şırnak province, Türkiye’s third largest peanut-producing region. The findings reveal that farmers allocate 62.7% of their agricultural land to peanut cultivation, achieving an average yield of 388.4 kg per decare and 37.5% of the farmers reported having agricultural insurance. According to the results of the binary logistic regression model, being married and having higher productivity significantly reduces the likelihood of purchasing insurance, while having off-farm income, using agricultural credit, benefiting from agricultural subsidies, following agricultural innovations, receiving training related to peanut production, and owning a larger land area significantly increases the likelihood of purchasing agricultural insurance. These results show that purchasing agricultural insurance is influenced not only by the socio-demographic characteristics of farmers but also by the structural characteristics of the farms. To increase the participation of peanut farmers in agricultural insurance in the region, it is crucial to conduct training programs aimed at raising awareness of agricultural insurance, especially among high yielding farmers.
