In verses 88th and 89th of Sūrah al-Nisā it is stated that those described as hypocrites should not be befriended unless they migrate in the way of Allah, and if they turn away from this, they should be captured and killed wherever they are. The narrations found in exegesis and hadith sources regarding the context of the reason for revelation of these verses have led to different interpretations concerning the identity of the audience targeted by the verses. This study aims to reveal the influence of the narrations in the exegesis and hadith literature regarding the identity of those described as hypocrites in verses 88th and 89th of Sūrah al-Nisā on the interpretation of these verses and the commentators' interpretations and evaluations of them, as well as to reveal the connection between verse 97th of Sūrah al-Nisā and verse 49th of Sūrah Al- Anfāl with the aforementioned verses. The relevant narrations are disconnected from each other in terms of context for various reasons. Therefore, it has been determined that a comparison of these narrations, even though the interpretation linking them to Uhud is supported by some narrations, is considered weak. The interpretation linking them to the Banu ‘Uraynah, on the other hand, has been criticized for its disconnect from the context. Conversely, it has been concluded that the view that the verses are directed at the hypocrites in Meccah who did not emigrate, collaborated with the polytheists, and sided with them at Badr is more consistent in terms of both context and the integrity of the narration.
