Özet

Lake-level fluctuations represent dynamic systems reflecting both regional hydro-climatic variations and human impacts, This study analyzes the spatiotemporal shoreline changes of Lake Erçek, a tectonic alkaline lake in the Lake Van Closed Basin, Türkiye, between 1984 and 2025. Situated at 1803 m altitude, the lake's basin was shaped by Upper Pliocene fault systems. Utilizing Landsat imagery (TM, ETM+, OLI/OLI-2) and GIS techniques, the research quantifies significant areal fluctuations. Findings reveal that the surface area increased from 101.98 km² in 1984 to a historical maximum of 109.17 km² in 2020, followed by a sharp recession to 102.84 km² by 2025—representing a 5.8% (6.33 km²) loss in just five years. Fed by the Özalp Stream, the lake's closed-basin structure and semi-arid climate (380.8 mm annual precipitation / 9.5°C average temperature) render it extremely sensitive to climatic variations, especially intense summer evaporation. These hydrological dynamics have turned the associated wetlands into highly fragile ecosystems. Results demonstrate indicate the influence of climatic variability; field observations confirm spatial shifts in settlements along the lake shore and rapid anthropogenic encroachment on receded lakebeds. Consequently, the study emphasizes that implementing sustainable basin management strategies is an imperative necessity to mitigate risks from rising temperatures and declining precipitation.
