Since the dawn of humanity, hierarchical order has persisted as an absolute condition wherever two people coexist, continuing to the present day. Hierarchy, which implies societal division, forms a social structure composed of different poles through a natural flow and identification after a certain stage. In this context, subalternity is a notion that refers to groups relegated to a secondary position, marginalized, restricted, and stripped of their representational capacity within the societal hierarchy. Women, in particular, emerge as a subaltern group due to the oppressive mechanisms of the patriarchal system. Constituting half of the population demographically and being positioned as subordinate across all societies and cultures, women represent the largest subaltern group. The media, by reproducing these subaltern identities through representation, ensures the perpetuation of the hierarchical order. In terms of societal issues, the media, as it shapes the consciousness of its consumers, stands out as the most critical mass communication tool in this particular problematic. This study aims to evaluate subalternity as a societal position in terms of its intergenerational transmission and the construction of consciousness. Women, as the primary object of the patriarchal order, and their subaltern identity form the focus of this study. The conceptual framework of the study is established through Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s concept of the “subaltern.” The findings obtained have been analyzed using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis method, and based on these findings, it can be said that the representation of women in the media does not indicate a liberation parallel to the level of societal development and education. The general societal horizon of meaning has reproduced/is reproducing itself through language, consciousness, and structure. In contrast, it can be suggested that women’s subalternity, as a product of the collective unconscious, should be unpacked across society through an analytical method. Understanding women’s subalternity and taking steps toward solutions is only possible by analyzing it in relation to the dominant male identity positioned against it. For a societal phenomenon to be understood, it must be mediated through its opposite.
