Özet
ABSTRACT
This study approaches traditional music not as a fixed form of cultural heritage that must be preserved unchanged, but as a dynamic cultural practice that is continuously reshaped through its interaction with social, cultural, technological, and economic transformations. It aims to examine the dynamics of change within traditional music and their implications for its potential sustainability through a theoretical and ethnomusicological framework.
Employing a qualitative research design, the study combines literature review, comparative ethnographic assessment, and theoretical analysis. The findings demonstrate that traditional musical practices undergo significant transformations in both their modes of production and processes of transmission as a result of modernization, migration, digitalization, media circulation, and the influence of the music industry. While these transformations create new spaces of visibility and opportunities for continued vitality for certain musical traditions, they also entail risks of contextual loss, standardization, and diminished functionality for others. The study further reveals that the sustainability of traditional music depends on a range of interrelated factors, including community-based ownership, the continuity of intergenerational transmission, the preservation of performance and ritual contexts, intercultural interaction, and the context-sensitive use of digital platforms. From this perspective, sustainability is understood not as resistance to change, but as a flexible and context-dependent approach that recognizes change as an inherent characteristic of tradition itself.
The study ultimately demonstrates that ensuring the sustainability of traditional music requires comprehensive and process-oriented approaches that place living cultural practices, practitioners, and communities at the center, rather than relying on preservationist and static policies.
