Investigation of Aquaporin 1 and Aquaporin 8 Transmembrane Protein Changes in Different Tissues of Van Fish (Alburnus tarichi)

Abstract: Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey and among the few soda lakes in the world. The Van fish (Alburnus tarichi) is the only vertebrate species that adapts to the physicochemical conditions of the lake (salinity 16.97‰; pH 9.66). Van fish migrate between different aquatic environments and adapt to tissues such as the gills, kidneys, and digestive system. Fish sampled from the Lake Van and the Karasu Stream were examined histologically. Histologically, these tissues resemble those of other teleost fish. This study revealed that aquaporins (AQPs), which are water channel proteins, play important roles in these adaptations. In the gills, the AQP 1 and AQP 8 proteins were predominantly present in chloride cells, with higher densities observed in fish from the Karasu stream. In the kidneys, the density of AQP 1 and AQP 8 varied according to the environment, with higher levels found in fish from Lake Van. In the digestive system, varying densities of AQP 1 and AQP 8 were observed, particularly in the foregut and hindgut. These findings suggest that these proteins play a fundamental role in osmoregulation and environmental adaptation when examined as immunohistochemistry.
