Özet

Giriş: İklim değişikliğiyle mücadelenin önemi her geçen gün artmaktadır.

Introduction: The importance of combatting climate change is growing every day. However, this struggle can only become a collective effort if individuals within society are mobilized. Social identities play a powerful role in motivating and mobilizing people to support social change. Pro-environmental behaviors (PEB) can be seen as one way of combatting climate change. Studying PEB through the lens of social identity theory has several advantages. First, it helps us understand processes between different social groups. Second, it offers the possibility of stronger, more collective change. Third, it can increase political awareness among the public.

Objective: This systematic review aims to examine the impact of individuals' social identities on PEB within the framework of social identity theory. Two main objectives have been established. First, to reveal how the types of social identities associated with PEB are defined and classified in the literature. Second, to identify the mediating and/or moderating variables that play a role in the relationship between social identity and PEB, and to evaluate whether these variables differ according to the type of identity and the nature of the behavior.

Method: Beyond the general consensus in the literature regarding the dominant role of social identity in promoting PEB, attention has also been directed toward inconsistent findings and the mediating or moderating factors involved in this relationship. Following the PRISMA guidelines, the literature review was conducted using the Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, GreenFILE, APA PsycArticles, DergiPark, TrDizin, ProQuest, and YÖKTez databases. In the English-language searches, the term "social identity" was used to identify studies addressing social identity within the social identity approach. To identify studies involving PEB, the terms “proenvironment* behaviour”, “pro-environment* action”, and “environment* protect*” were searched. In the Turkish-language searches (DergiPark, TrDizin, and YÖKTez), the terms “sosyal kimlik”, “çevre dostu davranış”, “çevre dostu eylem”, “çevre koruma”, “çevreci davranış”, and “çevreci eylem” were used. A total of 429 publications were identified. Of these, 27 research articles (37 studies) met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review.

Results: The social identities examined in the studies were classified into four categories: environmental identities, which place the environment directly at the core of one's identity; global identities, encompassing a sense of belonging to the world or humanity; group/place identities, based on identification with a particular group or location; and national identities, grounded in a sense of belonging to a nation or country. The findings indicate that environmental identity is particularly effective in promoting collective PEB (such as environmental activism) in individualistic societies, while identification with national identity may alter the direction of the identity-behavior relationship depending on cultural context. Environmental norms emerged as the most prominent factor influencing the identity-behavior mechanism, given their demonstrated association with every identity type. In addition, group efficacy was found to serve as a mediating factor that promotes behavior for all identity types except global identity.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that the identity-behavior mechanism is neither uniform nor unidirectional; rather, it is influenced by the type of identity, the nature of the behavior, the research context, and certain psychological factors, and the possible reasons underlying this variation have been discussed. In particular, the importance of societies' identity representations has been conveyed through findings that highlight cross-cultural differences. In this respect, policymakers need to take cultural dynamics into account when encouraging the adoption of environmental norms and persuading individuals that they can change the current trajectory. In doing so, the directive power of social identities can be utilized.
