Generally, monitoring and modelling using software of
environmental pollution depending upon net-pen operations have been
started to study since 1990‟s. In many countries, different modelling trials
using some softwares relating to farms of fish and other marine species have
made up till now. However, establishment permits are confirmed based on
results of modelling studies of cage farms in many countries in Europe.
Modelling studies are crucial to estimate environmental impacts of existing
fish farms and potential effects of future farms. In this study, practicability
of a commercial computer software using frequently for modelling on netpens
was investigated (MERAMOD). For this purpose, especially trout
farms operating on the fresh waters were planned. Some characteristics such
as current speeds, current directions, depth, stocking rates and feeding rates
per cage are essential for simulations of organic deposition. All data
regarding farm and cage area are input into the each of four software
modules and then data sets are transferred to another software called Surfer.
In this way, „foot print‟ of organic accumulation derived from cage farms
can be constituted to evaluate. Further studies, simulations can be validated
using different types of sediment traps. With this study, potential
environmental effects of existing farms on the fresh waters of Turkey can be
predicted and also similar studies can be a useful tool for determining
environmentally acceptable locations of future farms.
