Özet
In recent years, there has been a trend towards minimally invasive methods in the field of breast surgery. Until the 1980s, Halsted procedures (radical mastectomy) or Patey or Madden procedures (modified radical mastectomy surgeries) were generally performed on all patients, regardless of the stage of the disease. Later, with the development of radiotherapy, the concept of breast-conserving surgery began to advance (Jacobson et al., 1995). Subsequent studies have shown that breast-conserving surgery is as effective as mastectomy in both local tumor control, disease-free survival, and overall survival in suitable patients (Fisher et al., 1985). The concept of sentinel lymph node emerged in the 1990s, and subsequent studies showed that there was no significant difference in survival in patients diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer if the sentinel lymph node was negative and no axillary dissection was performed (Bedwinek et al., 1980).
