Televizyonun hayatımıza girmesinden bu yana uzun yıllar geçti. Televizyonlu bir dünyaya doğanlar bilmeseler de televizyon öncesi çağlarda sokaklar cıvıl cıvıldı. Çocuklar sakağa çıkar hiç sıkılmadan saatlerce oyun oynarlar ve zamanlarının önemli bir kısmını sokakta geçirirlerdi. Komşular birbirlerini sık sık ziyaret ederlerdi. Birisi konuşurken herkes gözünün içine bakar başka bir şeyle meşgul olmak ayıp karşılanırdı. Televizyonla birlikte tüm alışkanlıklarımız değişti. Önce çocuklar evlerine çekildiler daha sonra yetişkinler. Çocuk seslerinin kaybolduğu sokaklar tenhalaştı. Komşular birbirlerini ziyaret etmez oldular. Ziyaret etseler bile muhabbetin tadı kalmadı. Çünkü insanlar bir araya geldiklerinde birbirleriyle konuşmak yerine sürekli açık olan televizyonla meşgul olmayı tercih ettiler. İnsanların gözlerinin televizyonda olduğu bir ortamda konuşan kişi de konuştuklarından keyif alamaz oldu. Fakat televizyonun yaygınlaşması en çok çocuklara zarar verdi. Çocuklar çeşitli oyunlar oynamak, kendi aralarında ve büyüklerle konuşmak yerine televizyonun karşısına geçip saatlerini harcadılar. Yetişkinler, çocukların zamanlarının önemli bir bölümünü televizyon karşısında geçirdikleri bu yeni duruma itiraz etmediler. Çünkü zamanlarını istedikleri gibi kullanabilecekleri bir alan doğmuştu. Fakat çocuklar televizyon izledikçe gerçek yaşamdan kopup sanal dünyanın içinde kayboldular. Belki çoğu kimse farkında değil ama televizyonun karşısında geçirilen süre onların insan olmayı öğrenmek için ihtiyaçları olan süreden çalınmaktadır. Bu makalede televizyonun insan olmayı öğrenme süreci olarak tanımlanabilecek olan sosyalleşmenin önünde nasıl bir engel teşkil ettiği üzerinde durulmaktadır.
Many years have passed since television came into our lives. Even if those born into a television world don't know it, the streets were lively in the pre-television era. The children would go out and play for hours without getting bored and spend most of their time on the street. Neighbors visited each other often. When someone was talking, everyone would look into his eyes and it would be considered disgraceful to be busy with something else. With television, all our habits have changed. First the children stepped back to their homes, then the adults. The streets, where the voices of children disappeared, became secluded. Neighbors no longer visit each other. Even if they visit, their conversations have no taste. Since, people preferred to be busy with the television that was always on, instead of talking to each other, when people got together. The person speaking in an environment where people's eyes are on the television also could not enjoy what he was talking about. But the spread of television hurt children the most. Instead of playing various games and talking among themselves and with adults, the children spent hours in front of the television. Adults did not object to this new situation, where children spend a significant part of their time in front of the television. Since, there was an area where they could use their time as they wished. However, they were disconnected from real life and lost in the virtual world, as the children watched television. Maybe most people are not aware of it, but the time spent in front of the television is stolen from the time they need to learn to be human. In this study, it is emphasized how television constitutes an obstacle to socialization, which can be defined as the process of learning to be human.
