Abstract

The Zaza are an ethnic minority of Turkey (5–6 million people), whose origin is still not reliably established. The author cites the opinions of various scholars, most of whom consider the Zaza people an independent nation. Part of Zaza professes Sunnism, the other part adheres to alevism, that is, the Shiite direction of Islam.
