Morphologic and Histologic Examination of the Digestive Tract of the Armenian Gull

Özet

Abstract: Among the bird species living in the Lake Van Basin, the Armenian gull (Larus armenicus, Buturlin, 1934) is one of the dominant species. The largest breeding population of the species is the islands in Lake Van. The morphological and histological features of the digestive tract in birds generally vary depending on the feeding habits, food type, and habitat. The feeding habits of this seagull species differ from other bird species due to the habitat in which it lives. In this study, the digestive tract of the Armenian gull was examined morphologically and histologically. The morphological examination of the digestive tract in the Armenian gull revealed that the system begins with the beak and continues through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, cecum, and large intestine before terminating at the cloaca. No crop structure was observed in this species. The stomach consisted of two distinct regions: the proventriculus and the ventriculus. The intestinal tract distal to the stomach was divided into small and large intestines, with the small intestine comprising the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. At the junction between the small and large intestines, small cecal protrusions were identified as notable anatomical features. When the digestive tract of the Armenian gull was examined histologically, it was seen that, similar to other vertebrates, it consisted of an outermost serous layer, a muscularis layer consisting of the muscle layer, a submucosa layer and an innermost mucosa layer. Inner gastric glands and surface gastric glands were detected in the stomach. Simple tubuloalveolar glands were identified in the intestinal parts of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. In conclusion, the digestive system of the Armenian gull has been examined morphologically and histologically for the first time. The species was found to be morphologically similar to the Laridea family, to which it belongs, and histologically similar to vertebrates.
