A RESEARCH ON PERFORMANCE OF AN ARTIFICIAL PASTURE ESTABLISHED IN ARID CONDITIONS OF VAN REGION

ABSTRACT

Artificial pastures are high-yield and quality forage sources. In order to determine the first year performance of the artificial pasture facility, with the help of randomly placed fence in an artificial pasture established in a semi-arid climate and on lowland area; grazing capacity, canopy cover, botanical composition, green and dried yields and hay quality were investigated. Crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum (L.) Geratn.), burnet (Poterium sanguisorba Scop.), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.), Tall wheatgrass [Agropyron elongatum (Host) P. Beauv.] and hard fescue  [Festuca trachyphylla (Hack.) Krajina] species were used in the research. The ratios of the families in the mixture were determined as 60% of grass, 25% of sainfoin, and 15% of burnet. The rates of grass, sainfoin, burnet and other species in the covered area are 27.7%, 15.9%, 10.3% and 13.7%, respectively, and the total covered area is determined as 67.9%. By weight, 12.8% of the botanical composition consisted of grass, 50.5% sainfoin, 7.3% burnet and 29.8% other families. The average green herbage was 909.1 kg/da and dried herbage yield was 385.0 kg/da. Due to the high sainfoin ratio, the crude protein ratio was high and the crude protein yield was low. According to the "Pasture Condition Scale", the pasture quality grade is 5.9 and the pasture quality is 4.1-6, and it can be said that the pasture condition is close to good pasture. According to Pasture Quality Degree 1 LU (Livestock Unit) requires 0.85 ha artificial pasture area for a 150-day grazing period, and 1.3 ha artificial pasture area based on 909.1 kg/da fresh grass yield and 65% utilization rate. It is estimated that the difference will decrease further as productivity increases in the second and third years. Determining the number of animals to graze on artificial pasture and the pasture area according to the quality scores of the species will contribute to forecasting investment costs.
