Climate Change and Increasing Electricity Demand in Eastern Turkey: Current Situation, Trends and Future Predictions

Özet

The climate crisis, particularly the changes it has caused in temperature and precipitation patterns in recent years, has significantly increased electricity demand, especially in eastern Turkey. This research focuses on and evaluates the major and influential provinces of eastern Türkiye: Van, Bitlis, Muş, and Hakkari. The study utilizes data from the General Directorate of Meteorology (GDM), the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR), and regional electricity distribution companies. One significant parameter indicating the increasing impact of climate change across Turkey is that 2024 was projected to be the hottest year in the last 54 years. In the same year, the average temperature in Turkey reached 15.6°C, 1.7°C above the average of 13.9°C for the 1991-2020 period. Conversely, the total annual precipitation of 537.2 mm, 6.3% below the long-term average, suggests that the climate change crisis could have significant consequences not only for temperature but also for precipitation patterns. In this context, it has been assessed that rising temperatures in the summer months may affect cooling needs differently, while temperature changes in the winter months may affect electricity consumption related to heating in different ways.
