Özet

The gradual expansion of human settlements affects the natural environment and life in different ways. Domestic wastewater, agricultural and livestock wastes, which are released into the environment without treatment and uncontrolled, mix with natural waters and adversely affect their quality. Fish, one of the aquatic living groups, are constantly exposed to this effect. It is very important to determine the level of this effect. The liver, which is functional in the detoxification mechanism of living organisms exposed to harmful substances, is one of the structures in which toxic effects are particularly examined. In this study, Alburnus timarensis and Capoeta kosswigi, which are naturally distributed in Karasu river and found in this environment throughout the year, were studied. The aim of the study was to determine the changes of some biochemical parameters in the liver of two fish species of economic and ecological importance. Analyses were performed using the spectrophotometric method. Glutathione-s-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined in the samples. In C. kosswigi, GST activity and MDA content were significantly increased. SOD activity was significantly increased in A. timarensis. CAT activity changed at similar levels in both fish species. Two fish species in the same river system showed different biochemical responses to pollutants. It may be important to evaluate the effects of various groups of pollutants entering the river on fish living in these environments with oxidative stress parameters.
