Özet

Distinctive roles such as narrator, composer, poet, reminder, educator, social commentator, instrumentalist, and performer are attributed to âşık and dengbêjs. In fact, they deserve all these praiseworthy adjectives because they preserve oral culture/literature, enrich it, share it with the audience and pass it on to younger generations. By using their unique talents in face-to-face performances, âşıks and dengbêjs create social interaction sessions where the audience has the chance to remember, learn and have fun. These talented and devoted narrator-minstrels are living representatives of oral folklore, history, literature, culture and traditional etiquette. Âşıks perform epics, folk tales and various cultural narratives that represent the repertoire of the Turkish oral tradition, as well as love folk songs, ritual songs, lyrical songs, laments and heroic folk songs. Dengbêjs have almost the same functions as archival memory and performer of the Kurdish oral tradition. It should be noted that one of the most important characteristics of âşıks and dengbêjs is that they are both professional narrators; this includes the ability to use their voices, mastery of musical instruments and theatrical abilities in live performances. This study, which focuses especially on the narrator roles of minstrels and dengbêjs, aims to examine their mastery of narrating oral literary forms with a comparative method.
