Abstract

Ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenomas can cause primary hyperparathyroidism
(PHP). Anterior mediastinum is a rare localization for ectopic parathyroid adenoma. The ethiology
of PHP with the examined patients is seen on average of 1-2%. The nodular lesion found in the anterior
mediastinum as a result of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) showed increased focal activity in compatible with ectopic parathyroid
tissue, Technetium-99m- methoxyisobutylisonitrile (Tc-99m MIBI) scintigraphy for the fourtyyear
old examined female patient. After making an incision the anterior mediastinal tumor was resected
by a cervical incision and the result of pathology was reported as parathyroid adenoma. The
patient whose clinical findings and laboratory values returned to normal in the early postoperative
period, was discharged without any problem in this case, we have aimed to present the findings of
anterior mediastinal ectopic parathyroid adenoma contrast-enhanced CT, MRI, and Tc-99m MIBI
scintigraphy.
