Çalışma grubu 2021-2022 eğitim yılında Van’a bağlı Tuşba ilçesinde MEB’e bağlı okulda öğrenime devam eden 7. sınıf öğrencileridir.
This study aimed to measure the effect of the activity-based approach, one of the active learning elements, on the academic achievement of Year 7 students in the ‘Economics and Social Life Unit’ of their social studies course. This quantitative research was conducted using an experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups. The study group consisted of 7th grade students attending a Ministry of National Education school in the Tuşba district of Van during the 2021-2022 academic year. The study team, consisting of a total of 44 students, was defined as 7/A (experimental group) and 7/B (control group). Before the study, an achievement test and an attitude scale were administered to both groups as a pre-test, and the groups were determined by ensuring that their average school achievements were similar. Subsequently, over 15 lesson hours, topics covering the economics and social life unit from the seventh-grade social studies textbook were taught to the control group, mostly in the classroom environment, using a teacher-centred and straightforward narration method that emphasised the teacher's authority. The experimental group, however, was taught using an activity-based approach. After five weeks and 15 hours of lessons, a final achievement test and attitude scale were administered to both groups. The findings of the study show that there is a significant difference in the academic achievement and attitudes towards social studies lessons among participants in the experimental group. Based on this, it was determined that continuing lessons through activity-based teaching improves students' academic achievement and attitudes towards the subject. Based on the findings of the study, it was suggested that educational practices enriched with different activities could be used effectively by teachers in social studies lessons.
