In the history of Arabic literature, the practice of assigning nicknames to poets on the basis of a single verse, a distinctive hemistich, or a striking expression constitutes a highly meaningful phenomenon in terms of the social circulation of poetry, its memorability, and the relationship between poetry and poetic identity. Indeed, within Arabic literary memory, a number of poets came to be known not by their given names but by a remarkable word or verse occurring in their poetry, which over time became a defining element of their literary identity. This clearly demonstrates that poetry functioned not merely as an individual aesthetic production, but also as a collective mechanism of naming and meaning-making. This study addresses this phenomenon within a more limited and clearly defined framework by examining poets of the Jāhiliyya period whose nicknames are definitively derived from a verse they themselves composed. Rather than offering a general discussion of nickname formation across all periods of Arabic literature, the study focuses on the Jāhiliyya period as an early and formative stage, and considers only those cases in which the relationship between verse and nickname can be clearly established on the basis of transmission, context, and textual evidence. Within this framework, the study includes not only instances in which a poet’s nickname originates from his own verse, but also cases in which poets were named on the basis of an expression appearing in a verse composed by another poet. It should be noted, however, that the number of poets in the Jāhiliyya period who acquired nicknames—whether through their own verses or through verses uttered by others—is far too large to be exhaustively treated within the limits of a single article. Accordingly, with due consideration to article length and methodological coherence, the study has been deliberately restricted to poets who are more frequently mentioned in the literary sources, who enjoyed broader renown in comparison to their contemporaries, and whose modes of appellation are clearly documented in the classical literature. Thus, rather than aiming at a wide variety of examples, the study prioritizes the clarity of the verse–nickname relationship and the representative value of the selected cases. Another objective of the article is to offer a comprehensive evaluation of the classical and modern literature concerning verse-based poetic nicknames. In this regard, it is shown that from al-Jāḥiẓ (d. 255/869) through al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505), the phenomenon of verse- or poetry-based naming was recognized from an early period onward and addressed at times in independent works, and at other times under specific sections of literary and lexicographical studies. In the modern period, attention is drawn to studies that approach this tradition through more specialized and focused perspectives. While taking this rich body of literature into account, the primary aim of the present study is not to repeat previous discussions, but rather to conduct a text-centered analysis of Jāhiliyya-period examples in which the verse–nickname relationship is established with certainty. Accordingly, for each poet examined, the study analyzes the specific verse from which the nickname originated, the contextual features of that verse, and the manner in which this mode of naming became enduring within literary memory. The findings of the study demonstrate that verse-based poetic nicknames should not be regarded merely as a historical naming practice, but rather as a phenomenon closely connected to poetry’s role in identity formation and social meaning production
