Özet
The artist’s experiments with form allow figures, which are elements of expression, to gain new meaning through necessary figurative deformations. Mehmet Güleryüz, one of the expressionist artists of contemporary Turkish painting, interprets his figurative approach beyond the traditional understanding, offering the viewer a different perspective in his works. The animal figures accompanying the painter’s deformed human figures reflect the artist’s social critiques. Animal figures, used as a means of artistic expression, transcend their original forms and acquire new meanings through their transformation. The “dehumanization” transformation seen in the artist’s forms offers a critical approach to the social structure of the incomplete human. The metamorphosed animals in the paintings exhibit human characteristics in terms of body and expression, thus expressing human and animal characteristics within a single body. This study utilizes qualitative research methods to examine Mehmet Güleryüz’s figurative expressionist production and the thematic functions of animal imagery in his works. The study, after conducting a literature review, explores the artist’s paintings, selected through a purposive sampling method and featuring depictions of metamorphosed animals, are the subject of this study. Aiming to reveal the artist’s treatment of metamorphosed animal imagery, the study uses semiotic analysis to interpret the elements that constitute the artist’s form of expression through the paintings, attempting to explain the formal characteristics of the “other” created by metamorphosis.
