First Records of Gymnopilus arenophilus and Pholiota gallica (Agaricales) from Türkiye Based on Morphological and Molecular Evidence

Özet

This study evaluates the morphological and molecular characteristics of macrofungal specimens belonging to the genera Gymnopilus and Pholiota, identified during fieldwork in Çanakkale province of Türkiye in January 2025. The specimens were documented in detail in their natural habitats, their macroscopic characteristics were examined in situ and recorded using a digital camera. A total of four specimens of Gymnopilus and 10 specimens of Pholiota were collected and analyzed. The collected material was processed as fungarium specimens using standard laboratory methods and identified through classical taxonomic techniques and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (nrITS) sequences. Bayesian inference (MrBayes) was employed to construct phylogenetic trees, allowing robust verification of the molecular affiliations of the specimens. As a result of the analyses, the presence of Gymnopilus arenophilus and Pholiota gallica, two species reported here for the first time for the mycobiota of Türkiye, was confirmed. Both species have previously been documented only in a limited number of Mediterranean countries, and their occurrence in the Anatolian Peninsula has been scientifically verified for the first time in this study. Detailed macroscopic and microscopic descriptions are provided, supported by original illustrations and scanning electron microscopy images of basidiospores. Additionally, data on ecological preferences, habitat characteristics, geographical coordinates, and local distribution patterns are thoroughly presented. These findings not only introduce two new macrofungal species to Türkiye’s mycobiota but also highlight the ecological significance of Mediterranean forest ecosystems as reservoirs of overlooked fungal diversity.
