Özet

The aim of this study is to analyze the literary carriers of John Steinbeck (1902-1968) and Ernest Hemingway, who left their mark on a period of American literature. They were known not only in America but also all over the world, but also, they managed to become two great figures in the world literature, within the context of literary journalism. These two literary figures, who started their literary careers as reporters and continued as writers and changed the literary understanding of the period by bringing together journalism and literature, were examined within the context of the works they produced and the similarities of the works in question. Hemingway and Steinbeck, who personally experienced the Great Depression years and two great world wars, along with witnessing the most turbulent periods in the nation-building processes of the United States, managed to become prominent figures in the field of literature as well as in their journalistic carriers. Both of them, who returned with important memories that would contribute to their literary narratives from the war environment in which they played a role as reporters, did not limit themselves narratives of the war. These two literary figures have also become prominent in literary reportage writing, which combines journalism with literary description of artistic quality. Steinbeck and Hemingway, who fictionalized their period, events and problems with the reportage technique that reflects a journalistic narrative, have shaped their works that have gained great prominence around the world with this genre that can be called literary journalism. They pioneered the development of a new literary genre and style within the context of an extraordinary literary mastery, with various literary expressions characterized by a nonfiction narrative that went beyond the standard genre of reporting. This paper aims to bring together the major works of the two authors mentioned above in the genre of literary journalism, as well as evaluate and reflect a reading style based on the incorporation of literature and journalism.
